Mr. Nicholas Huerter joined the CD Program in March as Mrs. Granato-Wagner’s Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Student Intern.  Mr. Huerter quickly acclimated to the CD Program and quite quickly established a positive rapport with the students.  He successfully took over Mrs. Granato-Wagner’s classes and co-teaching duties, as well as, participated in student IEP meetings.  Mr. Huerter graduated with his Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders  in early May and will be joining the CD Program’s ESY team in July.  Congrats to Mr. Huerter on a great accomplishment and a thank you to the CD families for welcoming him into our classrooms and meetings.

Our Annual Student Achievement Night was celebrated on May 6th with over 60 attendees.  The graduates presented their “Senior Speech” to family and friends, received a gift from the program, and their Senior Certificate.  Students from every grade level were eligible to receive an award certificate for academic achievement, recognition, and/or participation in an extracurricular activity.  The evening also gave tribute to Mrs. Sharron Santefort, a teacher from the CD Program for over 25 years, who passed away in October of 2014.  The program also inaugurated the Sharron Santefort Award characterized by the student who demonstrates the perseverance and resiliency that are key components to learning self-reliance and social competency.  This year’s inaugural Sharron Santefort Award was presented to Junior, Darrin Nickleski.  It was an evening to remember!

CD Andrew US History Stations

6/2/2015

Picture
Students in the CD Andrew High School Program participated in a two-day event that focused on three eras of U.S. History that they learned about in great depth: the roaring 20’s, the Great Depression, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Students put the books away and circulated between the three teachers’ classrooms, where they were able to experience what life would have been like had they been living during those times and events. In Mrs. Lindemulder’s roaring 20’s station, students learned how to dance the Charleston and even participated in assembling a Ford car on an assembly line. In Ms. Kern’s Great Depression station, students were given a set amount of money and had to use it wisely, or else they would (and some did) end up in jail or homeless living under a box. In Mrs. Nagy’s Pearl Harbor station, students were able to experience what a Saturday night would be like in Hawaii by hanging out on a beach, eating various Hawaiian foods and fruity drinks, only to wake up the next morning (Sun, Dec. 7, 1941) and realize the entire harbor is being bombed.

CD Andrew Trust Buster Mania

English students in Mrs. Nagy’s and Ms. Kern’s classes at CD Andrew read the book Who Was Theodore Roosevelt? this semester, and as a final activity, they put together a Family Feud type competition called Trust Buster Mania. The students created an invitation, which they delivered to the juniors and seniors of the CD Program, as well as all the CD staff including our supervisor, Ms. Mitchell. They also made signs for their live audience to encourage respectful behavior during the competition. These students should be applauded on their efforts, as well as their impressive knowledge of the former President Theodore Roosevelt, aka the Trust Buster!

Kerkstra Room 22 Celebrates the End of the Year.

Last week, the CD program in Room 22 had one of their favorite end of the year activities, a picnic at Harvest Park.  Each student had a part in planning and facilitating the afternoon. The students were in charge of carrying and/or passing out supplies, setting up blankets, and planning games. They started off the afternoon playing catch with each other, blowing bubbles, drawing with chalk, and playing on the playgroup equipment. Unfortunately, as the students sat down to enjoy their McDonald’s lunch, the skies opened up and it began to rain…hard! The students were good sports and had fun hustling back to school in the rain! It was definitely a picnic to remember!
