District 142's G. Kerkstra Elementary has been nominated by the State of Illinois as a National Blue Ribbon School. G. Kerkstra Elementary is one of only 16 schools across the State to be honored with Blue Ribbon status. The U.S. Department of Education's National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. This coveted award was achieved over a multi-year time span of instruction and curriculum improvement, thanks largely to the efforts of Dr. Lori Leppert, Director of Pupil Personnel Services at District 142, and former long-time Principal of G. Kerkstra Elementary School. The District celebrates this achievement along with current G. Kerkstra Elementary School Principal, Jeff Kulik, and the dedicated faculty and staff of G. Kerkstra Elementary.

Dr. Leppert and Principal Kulik will work jointly to submit the formal application to the U.S. Department of Education in March, 2015. The application provides all the pertinent testing data showing G. Kerkstra Elementary students at the top 15 percent in both reading (English language arts) and mathematics of all schools in the State, based on its progress in closing achievement gaps between the school's subgroups and the State's all-student group over a five-year span.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program will review all applications for completeness, quality, and accuracy, over the spring and summer of 2015. In September, 2015, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education will formally announce the 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools across America. The National Blue Ribbon School status, once bestowed, is a permanent honor.
