Key to the success of the awareness project was the participation of Kerkstra Students who have been diagnosed with Type 1 - Juvenile Diabetes. These students, along with Mary Anne McKenna-Bryan from JDRF, took part in an education school assembly informing students about Type 1 Diabetes. The three-week long educational and fundraising "Kids Helping Kids" project was spearheaded by School Nurse Ellen Hanrahan, Principal Jeff Kulik, Teachers Mrs. Curtis, and Mrs. Meyers, and Southwest Cooperative Nurse, Mrs. Tengerstrom. A special "thank you" to Kerkstra Parents Mr. and Mrs. Pyzbylski, Mr. & Mrs. Haran, and Mrs. McCarthy. Students were encouraged to raise money to support JDRF and their mission to cure Type 1 Diabetes. Every donation resulted in a paper shoe being hung in the school halls. On Friday, May 8th, students celebrated with an all-school walk.
