Pie a Teacher Day

5/30/2018

Did your son or daughter tell you about "pie a teacher day"?

On Friday, May 25th, students "bought" a chance to pie a teacher of their choice!  Mrs. Kellermann tallied the bucks and announced which students paid the most behavior bucks to pie a teacher.  The teachers and students had an amazing time.  The photos tell it all from the teachers getting prepped and ready until their doomed fate of a whipped cream face.

It was a celebration to end an amazing school year!

On behalf of the CD Program, have a safe and fun summer!  See you in the fall for the 2018-19 school year.

Have you ever wondered what exactly a speech-language pathologist focuses on?

The scope of practice for an SLP is quite extensive. SLPs work with all ages, from infants to adults, on a wide range of communication skills as well as feeding and swallowing. They also work in a variety of settings, such as schools, hospitals, private practice, and skilled nursing facilities.

Speech-Language Pathologist must obtain both their Bachelor and Master Degrees in order to practice.  They go through vast training in clinical settings, school and hospital practicums to hone their craft before becoming certified to practice.

Vanessa Granato-Wagner:  Speech-Language Pathologist for the HS Classic Program
Kelly O'Brien: Speech-Language Pathologist for the HS DISCOVERS Classroom A165

Both have practiced for over a decade!
If you ask them they will surely tell you that they have the best job in the world!

End of the Year Field Trip

5/11/2018

Students and teachers enjoyed a day at Dave & Busters in Orland Park to play games and enjoy each other's company.  Afterward, we all ate a delicious pizza lunch at Aurelio's Pizza in Tinley Park.  Students ended the day with celebratory cupcakes and watched the video montage from Student Achievement Night.  We are so grateful to both establishments for welcoming us and treating us so well.

CD Classic: Student Achievement Night

5/11/2018

The CD Classic Program held it's 13th Annual Student Achievement Night on Thursday, May 10th.  There were close to 100 guests to celebrate the hard work of all students and to also acknowledge and congratulate our graduating class.  The evening was filled with emotion, as we honored the theme, "This Is Me" and listened to the farewell speeches of the seniors.  To conclude the night, the crowd watched a special musical video montage of photographs from this year made by Ms. McGreal.   Lastly, we had cake!  It was a wonderful way to end the school year!

The CD teachers are very proud of all of the students!

Congratulations to all!

Excavating "Fossils"

5/4/2018

The students in Mrs. Lavery's, Life Science class love the new unit they just started on Fossilization. This unit uses a multi-modality approach to learning, but there will be many hands on activities. Today the students learned how detailed a Paleontologist's  job is by having to extract chocolate chips out of a cookie. They needed to do this without breaking the chocolate chips. It was not easy, but they did awesome!

Monster Genetics

5/4/2018

Mrs. Lavery's class just finished learning all about genetics. The students had a great time with the final project of creating their own monster using various genetic codes. They did an awesome job!
