Classic ESY Last Week!

7/22/2020

ESY for the classic HS students was filled with live classes, one on one sessions, teacher/therapist recorded videos, YouTube videos, and superhero themed fun!  Students did work across an academic curriculum of English, Language Arts, Mathematics, PE activities, Personal Health, and Social Language.  We are, as always, so impressed by all that our students accomplished.  We are so proud of them!  Since, our theme was about "superheroes", we read and discussed a multitude of them during our live classes including,  Jane Addams, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Mae Jamison, Stephen Hawking, and John Muir.  Students explored heroes in their own life and wrote them letters to explain why and how they have been inspired by them.

Here are some examples of their letters (unedited):

Dear dad thank you for being there for me when I'm down you are always some one I can trust.  I'm very happy to say that you're in my family. I can go on for the amount of times you helped me. To have someone that is brave and strong like you I can't ask for better.  You are someone who has helped me go though a lot in life to have someone important in my life and I cant thank you enough

Mr. Bishop, I just wanted to say thank you for being the best funniest and the coolest science teacher
I could ever ask for. With you being Accomplishment, caring, having trust in us, being responsible, and being strong.

Mom, I am writing this letter to you because you are my hero. I am thankful for the things that you do for me.I am thankful for you being there for me and helping me with anything that I need help with. I look up to my mom because I know that I can trust my mom. I just want to say thank you for being the sweetest mom that I had ever had and thank you for working so hard and being there for me when I need. You are the best hero that I had ever met. Love you mom!

Mrs. Granato-Wagner, I am writing this letter because Ms. GW is my smart hero of all. Thank you for teaching me about commenting and others too for our Zoom chats we did on Tuesdays. You always care for me when we do some teaching and I know you would look forward to do this again in the future. Ms. GW, thank you for everything.

Mom, I am writing this letter because you are my hero. Thank you for being caring and thoughtful. Thank you for making me feel brave. You make me look up to you because you are very important in my family. Thank you for being caring and nice.

You are my hero Connor because your so strong. Thank you for caring about me Connor.  Thank you for being part of this family and also being in the army. The reason I look up to him because to me he is special and brave and giving. He is family and he is my cousin and he is awesome

On the last day of ESY, Mr. Bishop's (& Mrs. Granato-Wagner) & Ms. Mirabella's (& Ms. Castaneda) classes will take a virtual field trip together!  This will be the first time the two high school groups have gotten together all ESY (that's how busy everyone has been learning & working!).  The virtual field trip will be a tour of Tinley Park Fire Department's newly built fire house and fire station (Station 47).  Afterward, we look forward to having a fire fighter join us as our guest speaker (from a different fire department) to talk to the students about being a fire fighter, his inspirations, and any general questions the students may have.

It is time more than ever to celebrate the heroes in our life.  Heroes come in every shape and form.  They are family members, friends, teachers (we hope), and local community members.

Thank you for a great ESY!  Be safe & healthy!
