On November 5th, Mrs. Kellermann and Mrs. Granato-Wagner hosted a Parent Group with guest speaker, Mr. Adam Wouk. Mr. Wouk works at Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) in the Office of Disability Services. He spoke to a group of CD parents about the ins and outs of going to college as a student with a disability. The presentation offered so much information, especially about how students need to know their disability (needs), abilities (strengths), what works for them (accommodations), and how to advocate (communicate what they need) for their unique language and learning needs. Mrs. Kellermann and Mrs. Granato-Wagner also explained to parents that Ability Awareness and Advocacy are topics always covered in the Future Focus or Interpersonal Application (IA) courses. Currently, the IA II/III (Jrs/Srs) are learning about the components of their IEP. All Jrs/Srs have also created a slideshow in English classes to lead parts of their Annual Review IEP meetings. Parents were engaged, asked great questions, and the entire program really appreciated Mr. Wouk coming out to talk to everybody.
