APMS 8th graders took a trip to our state's capital! The students explored Lincoln's home, the capitol buildings, saw where the governor's office is and learned all about the history of Illinois. What a fun trip with a stop at Illinois State University on the way home.
A23 and A24 joined forces and created candy grams for Arbor Park students! All grades enjoyed purchasing handmade candy gram treats made by CD Program students. Each student was able to interact with their general education peers by selling the candy grams and then delivering them Halloween day! The students raised these funds to support their upcoming community outings and extra incentives they enjoy. WOW!
On our last day before Fall Break, we enjoyed a Charlie Brown Feast (i.e. popcorn, jelly beans, pretzels, and toast/crackers) with our friends in C12 while we watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. We practiced using our manners (being respectful) and enjoyed helping Daniel celebrate his first Thanksgiving in America! We are thankful for all of our friends and family this season and all year long!
In C11, we celebrated two holidays related to the end of Autumn - Halloween (or Samhain as it was originally known) and Dia De Los Muertos (or Day of the Dead). We learned the histories of both holidays and compared and contrasted important facts about each. For example, we dress up in scary costumes for Halloween so we blend in with visiting spirits and they will leave us alone. However, for Dia De Los Muertos, we place candles, marigolds, and pictures out so the spirits of our ancestors will visit us. We love when our social studies lessons lead to parties/fiestas in C11!
On October 24, we went to the Shedd Aquarium with our friends from C12. We visited the Wild Reef where we saw aquarium employees and volunteers feeding the animals and cleaning their exhibits. We even saw employees catching big fish in one display in order to move them to an exhibit of their own (they had been eating all the food before the smaller fish had a chance to eat!). We also watched a diver feeding the animals in the Caribbean Reef exhibit, got a good visit in with the beluga whales (Mrs. G's favorite!), went to the tide pool where we touched some sea stars and barnacles, and watched the dolphins show off their skills in the aquatic show. It was a great day to visit the animals we have been studying in science this month!
C11 had a great time visiting Konow's Corn Maze with all our CD Program friends on Tuesday as part of our Fall Into PBIS kickoff! Our students practiced being safe, responsible, and respectful while feeding animals, playing on the big blow-up pillow, riding on the hay rack, and going through the corn maze.
The entire CD Program went on a community outing trip to Konows Corn Maze in Homer Glen! Students were able to interact with their fellow CD peers and enjoy a hay ride, meeting many types of farm animals, exploring a hay maze, jumping on giant trampolines, feeding goats and jumping in giant pools of corn! What an adventure!
The students in Ms.Regan and Ms.LaPrairie's middle school class have started off the year enjoying our new typing curriculum. This year students will be exposed to typing instruction through the Keyboarding Without Tears curriculum! This addition to our curriculum is teaching our students not only typing and computer skills, but responsibility. Students are responsible for maintaining their Chromebooks by logging in daily and making sure their Chromebook is plugged in and ready for the next day. Our students are doing a wonderful job being responsible and enjoying the use of technology in the classroom!
